Services provided
Hutt Hospital provides only a very limited abortion service. Capital & Coast DHB provides a regional service for people in the greater Wellington region, which covers the Hutt Valley.
First trimester termination and second trimester on other than grounds of fetal anomaly are provided mainly in Level J Unit, Wellington Hospital.
Termination under general anaesthetic is provided in Hutt Hospital for those who insist on Hutt Hospital for exceptional circumstances. The referring doctor needs to contact Hutt Hospital gynaecologists to discuss this.
Second trimester also provided mainly in Level J Unit, Wellington Hospital for mental and physical health grounds.
Terminations for fetal anomaly are again mostly provided by Wellington Hospital, under the care of the Maternal Fetal Medicine Team (Ward 11). A limited number of terminations for fetal anomaly are provided in the Hutt by consultants caring for the women.
DHB responsibilities
All District Health Boards are required to provide termination of pregnancy services "for those women who meet the criteria provided by the Crimes Act 1961 and the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Act 1977". See Ministry of Health. However accessing accurate, up-to-date and informative details about how individual District Health Boards provide these services, or whether they provide them, has been extremely difficult. The information provided here is the best that we have been able to obtain for this district to date. We will continue to update the website as we obtain further information.
